History

Named after the Town of York which proceeded the City of Toronto, Yorkville was first incorporated as a village in 1853. The oldest structure in the area is the historic Yorkville Fire Hall located beside the Four Seasons at 34 Yorkville Avenue. The Fire Hall still bears the original coat of arms of Yorkville village on its tower.

Yorkville was the first village annexed by the City of Toronto in 1883 but has always maintained its own identity as a place distinctive neighbourhood onto itself. It has been through many transformations from hippie haven in the 1960’s to a shopping mecca in the 1980’s and 1990’s and now to its reincarnation as a premium area for the finer things in life.
